Who I work for and why

Who I work for and why

I have had a lot of jobs in my forty-five years of life.  I’ve worked as a janitor, as a tennis pro at a Country Club, as a pastor at several churches and as the head of a start-up publishing house.  All of my past jobs have had good things about them and all of them have had bad things.  I’ve learned much from every one of them and am thankful that I have gotten the experience from each of them.  Learning to work with others in pursuit of a common vision and common mission is challenging but it always motivated me to work on a team that cared about their vocational identities as well as the overall corporate goals.  But as I have aged, I have been looking for a job that has far more good things than bad things.  I want employment that seems perfectly suited for my gifts and skill sets.  I want a job that has clear and positive communication between leadership and management.  I want a job that motivates me to every day excel, because I am excited to chase the company’s mission.  And I think I have finally found my ideal spot.

I am working for a business now that I never thought I would work for and for an industry that I thought I would not be interested in.  But, as it turns out you can never say never to anything in this life.  What is this job and what is the company?  Well it’s called Sewell Shutters and it designs and installs McKinney plantation shutters and South Lake plantation shutters in homes all around the Dallas area.  It doesn’t sound that interesting does it?  Even as I write this I cannot believe I am saying that this is my perfect job, but so far I can find nothing bad.  Communication is both top-down and down-up.  In other words, everyone listens to everyone else without letting positions determine the weight of the ideas being shared.  There is respect shown to everyone and although there is a clear leadership structure, the leaders are always trying to be fair with those in the lower levels of management.  The pay is set at a living wage for everyone.  They have biblical values that they follow and they pursue integrity at every turn.  And last but certainly not least, they do amazing work for their clients who all seem to heap praise on the company for doing everything so well.  I can’t wait to go into work every day and try to be a positive influence like everyone else around me.  I don’t know if I got blessed or just got lucky that I found this place.  I recommend that you really seek out your own perfect job someday.  I think if you go into your next job search with that sort of intentionality, you too can find your best place to work.  Good Luck!!!
